Some key fobs feature a specific remote engine start button (for instance Ford's keyfob has an arrow that is circular and going clockwise) which you must press in order to remotely start your car. Others, such as Mazdas requires that you first secure the key, and then press the start button.
There may be a dead or weak battery in your key fob if you aren't able to start your car. The battery in the key fob isn't powerful enough to send a signal to your car system.
